GREAT RETREAT AND ROOM FOR THE EXTENDED FAMILY
For important family events this big family would come home from all over Australia and one of the family elders bought the old Petford School and Hall to successfully accommodated the entire family when the clan gathered.
The property hosts various accommodation choices, caravans, dongas and the original buildings, multiple bathrooms, outdoor and indoor kitchens, undercover and outdoor gathering spots with bore water and septic tank facilities and 3 bay work shop with concrete floors and power.
Located just off the Burke Development Highway is a 2.16Ha (5.3 acres) fully fenced block with the original tennis court and cricket pitch still in working order.
Petford is 81 klms west of Mareeba and a further 64 klms on to Chillagoe. Petford was named for a Queensland Railway official John Joseph Petford. The railway station was on the Chillagoe Railway & Mining Company line that ran from Mareeba to Mt Garnet.
The station no longer exists but the line does and services the Savannahlander tourist train that runs from Cairns to Forsayth.
The Bamford Provisional School opened in January 1905 and closed in 1907 but reopened as the Bamford State School on the first January 1909 and finally closed in August 1935 and the Petford School opened in it's place and finally closed in 1995.
The school house still exists, they built them to last in those days! If you would like to escape to the country, buy a piece of history with endless opportunities call the listing agent Karen Ranie on 0458408540
